The Blount County Writers Circle celebrated its one year anniversary Oct. 10 at the Oneonta Public Library. There were snacks and coffee as the group assembled to greet the public and new members before the morning meeting began.
The group was started by Helen Robinson on Oct. 11, 2008, as a forum for writers to gather and discuss their craft and how to improve skills at creative writing. Technical aspects on the art of writing are presented by group members each month, giving insight into the inner workings of writing as hobby or occupation, with occasional sample readings from members’ works.
There are writers of all stages present from beginner to published, with a wide variety of genres represented including children’s fiction, humor, poetry, prose, fiction, science fiction, fantasy, adventure, western, and observational vignettes.
One common factor among the group is a passion for writing. Lively discussions are enjoyed each meeting no matter the topic.
Helen Robinson said, “I am thrilled at such a large turn out for the anniversary meeting and am pleased to greet new members and glad for the large participation for the meetings over the past year.” Her hopes for the coming year were “that worthy goals would be set to help our writing and further our writing ambitions.”
Randall Roberson commented that “since joining the Writers Circle, my knowledge of writing has expanded and I hope from future meetings to gain even more knowledge.”
Timon David Skees said that he hopes to share his knowledge of writing with other writers and to himself become a better writer, by learning from them and helping others become better writers.
Pete Faust said that he was glad that Blount County had a group that could meet and share the joy of writing in all of its forms. “My hope for the future of the Writers Circle is that the group would help all of the writers become more skilled and comfortable expressing and creating with their writings.”
The Blount County Writers Circle meets the second Saturday of each month from 10 a.m. until 12 noon at the Oneonta Public Library’s conference room. The group welcomes any new members who wish to attend future meetings. The Blount County Writers Circle thanks the Oneonta Public Library, Library Director Gail Sheldon, and all the employees who have made the meetings possible and enjoyable during the past year.
