Blount County Junior High Tournament has begun

Hayden and Locust Fork were the only schools to receive No. 1 seeds for this year’s Blount County Tournament, which is being played at Susan Moore High School.

Hayden is the No. 1 seed for junior high boys and girls, JV boys and varsity boys while Locust Fork is the top seed for JV girls and varsity girls.

The junior high tournament actually got started Saturday. Normally, the tournament would start on Monday but the organizers – rightfully so – didn’t want to go head-to-head with the Alabama-Clemson National Championship Game.

Saturday’s games went pretty much according to plan with the No. 2 and 3 seeds romping to big wins while the No. 5 seed ousted the No. 4 seed.

In girls play, No. 2 Locust Fork drilled No. 7 J.B. Pennington 44-5 and No. 3 Appalachian rolled past No. 6 Southeastern 35-6. No. 5 Susan Moore surprised No. 4 Cleveland 37-35.

Thursday’s semifinals have No. 1 Hayden meeting No. 5 Susan Moore at 4 p.m. and No. 2 Locust Fork taking on No. 3 Appalachian at 6:30 p.m.

In boys play, No. 2 Southeastern took down No. 7 Locust Fork 36-23 and No. 3 Cleveland eased past No. 6 Susan Moore 46- 30. No. 5 J.B. Pennington rallied for a 37-34 win over No. 4 Appalachian.

Thursday’s semifinals have No. 1 Hayden meeting No. 5 J.B. Pennington at 5:15 p.m. and No. 2 Southeastern squaring off against No. 3 Cleveland at 7:45 p.m.

The girls championship game is Saturday at 6 p.m. followed by the boys championship game at 7:30 p.m.

Varsity tournament next week

The varsity tournament (see brackets on following page) will start Monday, Jan. 18, and conclude with the championship games on Saturday, Jan. 23.

There will be three games on Monday and Tuesday – JV boys, varsity girls and varsity boys – starting at 5:15 p.m.

The JV girls will not play on Monday and Tuesday – Appalachian and Susan Moore do not have teams – so that bracket will not start till Wednesday. The schedule Wednesday through Saturday has four games each evening, starting with JV girls at 4 p.m., followed by JV boys, varsity girls and varsity boys.
