Three candidates are running for the position of District 3 county commissioner. Incumbent Dean Calvert, running for a second term, faces two challengers, both Oneonta businessmen: Pat Bryant and Pat Hyde. All are Republicans. No Democrats qualified to run for the job.
District 3 comprises about one-quarter of Blount County, lying along the eastern boundary of the county, adjacent to both St. Clair and Etowah counties. It includes the municipalities of Oneonta, Allgood, and Highland Lake, and extends to the outskirts of Altoona in Etowah County. Straight Mountain and Murphree Valley are its predominant geographic features. The District 3 road budget for 2014 is $942,210, the same as Districts 2 and 4, but less than District 1’s $1,019,414.
The entry-level commission job pays $40,732.88, including a $6,000 expense stipend, for a new commissioner. The base salary of $34,732.88 increases by 1 to 3 percent in years where a cost-of-living raise is given. Term length for the job is four years.
