Two candidates face off in the Republican Primary for the District 3 Blount County Board of Education election: incumbent Bruce McAfee and challenger Magen Horton-Stewart. No Democrats qualified to run for the job.
The county school board and its members have an important influence on decision-making, problemsolving, matters of discipline, and financial oversight of a county school system consisting of seven high schools, a total of 17 instructional sites, nearly 1000 employees (the county’s largest employer), and 8238 students.
The length of the term is six years. School board members represent their own districts, but are also responsible for the welfare of the county system as a whole. The county is divided into five districts: Hayden, Blountsville, Susan Moore, Locust Fork/Cleveland, and Southeastern/Appalachian. Board members are elected on a staggered schedule. The primary election is June 3.
