Just one week before the start of the school year, Susan Moore Elementary is looking for a new principal. On Monday, the Blount County Board of Education accepted the resignation of long-time principal Helen Dunn.
“I am sad to see her go but I understand,” said Supt. Jim Carr. “She is taking a position in the Cullman County system that is much closer to home.
“She has done an outstanding job for us and we wish her well. She has really done a great job. It was simply an opportunity that she couldn’t turn down.”
According to Carr, the position was posted Monday and will remain posted for two weeks.
In other business, the board acted on Carr’s recommendation and:
paid $9200 for 2011-2012 School Superintendents of Alabama membership dues.
allowed the transfer of a student to the Jefferson County system with the stipulation that the Blount County system assumes no liability in relation to the release.
contracted with nurses Angela Gardner and Libby Moon to provide services for specific students during a two-week summer intervention program from July 25 through Aug. 5. Each will be paid $25 per hour from At-risk funds, with the total amount not to exceed $600 per nurse.
contracted with school nurses Mavis Phillips (Appalachian), Kim Tripp and Vonda Littleton ( J.B. Pennington), Teresa Latham and Sonya Boatright (Locust Fork High), Rita Brown and Marlain Bailey (Susan Moore High), and Libby Moon (Appalachian, Susan Moore High, Locust Fork High) to provide nursing services for specific students during extracurricular activity from Aug. 1, 2011, through July 31, 2012. Each will be paid $25 per hour from the general fund.
entered into a public works contract with Locker-Pro of Pelham to provide labor and materials to install new lockers at Southeastern School. The total amount of the contract shall not exceed $28,000.
contracted with James E. Harris and Janie Smith to provide psychological evaluations from Aug. 1, 2011, through July 31, 2012. Each will be paid $90 per evaluation from IDEA Part B and/or general funds.
contracted with Lynn Ponder to provide occupational therapy evaluations and supervision of the occupational therapy assistant from Aug. 1, 2011, through July 31, 2012. She will be paid $60 per hour from IDEA Part B and/or general funds.
contracted with Brenda Mackentepe and Nan Adamson to provide achievement testing for students referred for special education services from Aug. 1, 2011, through July 31, 2012. Each will be paid $35 per test from IDEA Part B and/or general funds.
contracted with Cynthia Augustine from Aug. 1 to Aug. 15 to complete the school outcome survey documentation. She will be paid $20 per hour from ARRA and/or IDEA Part B funds.
contracted with Mary Grace Hicks to serve as a facilitator for the teacher induction program Aug. 2 – Aug. 4. She will be paid $150 per day from Title II funds.
contracted with Ronda J. Sullins to serve as part-time guidance counselor, up to 77 days, at Locust Fork High from Aug. 15, 2011, through April 30, 2012.
allowed Blount County District Attorney Pamela Casey to offer two presentations to ninth-grade students (and other grades upon request) in all high schools. Presentations, which will be scheduled by each high school principal, will include content for the Zero Meth campaign in one session with the other regarding online safety, sexting, and bullying.
awarded the gasoline and diesel fuel bid to MJE Oil Co. for the period Aug. 1, 2011, through July 31, 2012.
approved Haylee Fadlevich and Kandace West as volunteers to work with the Locust Fork High School Band during the 2011-2012 school year.
approved a field trip request for the Locust Fork High football team to attend camp at Camp Hargis in Chelsea, Aug. 3-6.
accepted resignations from Katherine Graves, Appalachian family and consumer science teacher; Nita Robinson, Appalachian School teacher; Nicole Heptinstall, Hayden Elementary teacher; J. Beth Dial, Hayden High teacher; M. Shane Bright, Susan Moore High teacher; and Denver Jones, transportation department employee.
transferred Blountsville Elementary teacher Haley Beasley to the position of special education teacher at the school; Hayden Primary special education aide Sandra Hicks to Locust Fork High; bus driver Sue Dorning to the position of school bus aide at the Blount County Learning Center; school bus aide Tanya Adams to the position of bus driver at the Blount County Learning Center; and utility bus driver John William Ellis to the position of bus driver for Hayden schools.
assigned John Carl Acton to Hayden High’s bus route to the Blount County Career Technical Center.
employed Martha Joyce Franklin, longterm substitute special education aide, and Ashley Parkins Pruitt, long-term language arts substitute teacher, Hayden Middle; Cheryl Kelly, computer applications teacher, Locust Fork High; Lauren Brothers, long-term substitute teacher, Susan Moore Elementary; and Amelia Suzanne Burke, FACS teacher, Appalachian High.
contracted with Karen Bradford to provide EL teacher training and assist with other EL/migrant school and district issues as requested by the federal programs coordinator from Aug. 15, 2011, through May 25, 2012.
Finally, the board allowed Appalachian School to obtain a loan to purchase a mower for maintenance of athletic fields.
The loan is not to exceed $15,000 and will be paid from the school’s local funds.
In the absence of board president Gregg Armstrong, vice president Bruce McAfee chaired the meeting. Also present were board members Craig Johnson, Jackie Sivley, and Chris Latta, Carr, assistant superintendent Rodney Green, board secretary Karla Latham, and several visitors.
The board normally meets the first Monday of every month but has already scheduled called meetings for Tuesday, Aug. 9, at 3 p.m. and Tuesday, Sept. 6, at 1 p.m.
