Schools to receive royalties

Schools in the Blount County system will receive royalties from the sale of merchandise with school logos and designs after the Blount County Board of Education approved a licensing agreement during last week’s regular meeting.

The board reached the agreement with LRG Prep, LLC – the only licensing company approved by the Alabama High School Athletic Association.

The agreement is for items marketed and sold at regional and national retailers.

In other business, the board acted on the recommendation of Supt. Jim Carr and:

approved field trip requests from Appalachian, Blountsville, and Susan Moore elementary schools and Appalachian, Cleveland, Hayden, and J.B. Pennington high schools.

entered into agreements with the Alabama Department of Transportation for work at Southeastern School. Agreements concern construction of a median crossover, grading and landscaping right-of-way, installation of drainage structures on right-of-way, and construction of a turn-out for highway access.

agreed to pay Lavonda B. Anderson and Donna Weaver $50 each, plus related fringe benefits, from Hayden Primary’s local funds to work in the kitchen for Hayden Primary’s open house and 35th anniversary celebration.

agreed to pay Debby Doss and Jenny Walker $100 each, plus related fringe benefits, from Hayden Elementary’s local funds to work the Hayden Primary and Hayden Middle school pageants on Feb. 26.

employed Loren Green to teach a cheerleading clinic at Appalachian High for junior high and varsity tryouts during the 2010-2011 school year. She will be paid $100 plus related fringe benefits from the school’s local funds.

allowed Lorene Hill to work approximately six hours to prepare food for Appalachian’s PTSO banquet on April 2. She will receive substitute pay plus related fringe benefits from the school’s PTSO fund.

allowed Appalachian High to contract with Highland Lake for use of the Anchor for the Junior Beta Spring Formal Dance on April 1. The contract, not to exceed $150, will be paid from the school’s local funds.

allowed Appalachian High to contract with Twin Oaks at Heritage for the 2011 Junior-Senior Prom on April 22. The contract, not to exceed $2200.01 will be paid from the school’s local funds. The school was also authorized to contract with JAMM Entertainment to provide entertainment for the prom. This contract, not to exceed $800, will be paid from the school’s local funds.

allowed Cleveland High to contract with School in Sites to provide hosting for the school website. The contract, not to exceed $1500, will be paid from the school’s local funds.

granted five leaves-of-absence requests from employees and extended the leave of another employee.

employed Joanna Sellers, school bus aide, Blount County Learning Center; Cynthia Russell, bus driver, Hayden schools; Brittany Boring, long-term ELL substitute teacher, Southeastern Elementary. The board also transferred Locust Fork bus driver Timothy Whitley to Susan Moore.

approved the following non-compensated volunteers: Cleveland High – Jessica Green and Robert Harris (softball); Danny Ray Kelsoe, Stephen Johnson, and Larry Melvin Jr. (baseball). J.B. Pennington – Ronda Smith (softball). Susan Moore – Curtis Simoneaux (Susan Moore).

contracted with Kay Williams to provide homebound services to a Blount County Learning Center student. She will be paid $20 per hour plus travel reimbursement at the board-approved rate. The contract, not to exceed $1000, will be from special education (ARRA), IDEA Part B, and/or general funds.

contracted with Linda S. Tidwell to provide homebound services for an Appalachian High School student. She will be paid $20 per hour plus travel reimbursement at the board-approved rate. The contract, not to exceed $5000, will be paid from special education (ARRA), IDEA Part B, and/or general funds.

contracted with Arianna Dobbs to provide homebound services for a Hayden Middle School student. She will be paid $20 per hour plus travel reimbursement at the board-approved rate. The contract, not to exceed $500, will be paid from the general fund.

adopted the Alabama Association of 504 Coordinators “Serving Students with Disabilities under Section 504 – A Reference Manual” as the model for the Blount County Schools’ 504 system plan.

allowed J.B. Pennington to contract with Adventure Bus Charter and Tours Inc. to transport students to and from Montgomery on April 20. The contract, not to exceed $2500, will be paid from the school’s local funds.

allowed Locust Fork High to contract with Amerson Event Services to provide a music and light package for a dance on March 18. The contract, not to exceed $350, will be paid from the school’s local funds.

allowed Blountsville Elementary to contract with Adventure Bus Charter and Tours Inc. to transport students to and from Six Flags over Georgia on May 6. The contract, not to exceed $2100, will be paid from the school’s local funds.

agreed to pay Kevin Cleckler and Larissa Cleckler to serve as judges for Cleveland High’s auxiliary tryouts during the month of April. Payment of $75 to each, plus fringe benefits, will come from the school’s local funds.

agreed to pay Rainbow Arnold and Stacy Arnold to work the Hayden High auxiliary clinic from March 28 through March 31. Each will receive $350, plus fringe benefits, from the school’s local funds.

agreed to pay Steven Lyles (drum instructor), Stacey Arnold (dance team and majorette instructor), and Rainbow Arnold (color guard instructor) to work at Hayden High’s 2011 summer band camp. Each will receive $100 per day plus fringe benefits from the school’s band booster funds.

Finally, the board handled several disciplinary matters in executive session.

Present at the March 7 meeting were board members Gregg Armstrong, Craig Johnson, Bruce McAfee, Jackie Sivley, and Chris Latta, Carr, assistant superintendent Rodney Green, board secretary Karla Latham, and several visitors.
