Bloomin’ Pie Days

10TH ANNIVERSARY

It’s this weekend! One of the most delightful of the state’s boutique festivals, and it’s right here in your backyard – at 2395 Skyball Road. This Saturday and Sunday, June 9 and 10, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Dunn’s Daylily Garden. To get there, follow the Bloomin’ Pie Day signs from U.S. 231 between Cleveland and Blountsville.

We like Bloomin’ Pie days at The Blount Countian because it gives us a chance to indulge our sense of fantasy – and play with our color palette. We may have overdone it this time – showing a platter of fried pies sprouting a gorgeous bloom, but hey, you don’t get too many chances like this. The lily variety shown is called “Cimmaron Rose,” and it’s a stunner. But no more so than 916 other varieties – from gaudy, masculine beauties to ruffled, ladylike artworks in subtle pastels – that will be on display. And they’re for sale!

That’s the concept behind Bloomin’ Pie Days – more daylily varieties than you’ve ever seen before and more homemade fried pie flavors (about a half-dozen) than you generally see in one place (made in the pie bakery on site). They’re presented for your laid-back enjoyment amongst an acre or so of lily beds in dappled shade and sun that are ideal for browsing with like-minded flowerlovers. There’ll be plenty of cool drinks under a canopy for when you need to wet your whistle, too.

Drawings will be held Saturday at noon and Sunday at 2 p.m. for door prizes, choice daylilies, and fancy Hydrangea varieties. Dunn’s remains open through the month of June for newly-minted and not-so-newly minted lily collectors, but better call ahead before you go – (205) 429-2392.
