A single bid of $469,000 was submitted to renovate Blount County’s three covered bridges. The bid was submitted by Bob Smith Construction of Trussville, and opened at a recessed meeting of the Blount County Commssion on Sept. 26.
According to county engineer Richard Spraggins, the contract for the work will be sent to the contractor, who has 15 days to respond by accepting and posting the required bond for the contract. A pre-construction meeting will then be held with the contractor. Following that meeting, a notice will be issued authorizing the contractor to begin work within a subsequent 15 days.
The start date for repair and renovation should be near the end of October, Spraggins said. He had previously said the project should be completed by October 2012. In other actions, the commission:
approved purchase of a metal building for the Blount County Rescue Squad, the squad to reimburse 100 percent of the cost. The building will be erected on land leased from the county, both building and the land to revert to the county at the end of the lease.
approved District 3 to assume all cost associated with the pothole truck and affiliated employee previously shared by three districts; each district will now handle its own pothole work, using the regular district road crew.
approved, at the sheriff’s recommendation, re-installation of a security camera in the hallway leading to the district attorney’s office in the courthouse.
approved a one-year extension of jail healthcare contract with Southern Health Partners.
approved awarding annual bid for a chip spreader to A-1 Operations.
approved awarding annual bid for janitorial supplies to JanPak.
