Art Camp coming next week

If you think Art Camp’s not a blast, check out the expressions on these young faces from last year’s edition – (From left) Taylor Latta, Trinity Doss, and Mallory Allen. This year, the five-day camp will be held July 12 to July 16 at Oneonta High School. Two sessions are available. Students who have finished third- through fifth-grade will meet from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. each day. Students who have finished sixth- through eighth-grade will meet from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. each day. Instructor is Leasa Brock of Warrior; $50 per student fee includes admission and art kits. Space is limited to 30 slots for each age group, so make your reservations soon by calling 274-0511. “We’ve done this for three years to carry out our mission of providing cultural opportunities in the arts – music, theater, and visual arts – to Blount County’s children,” said Carol Lewey of the Community Arts Council of Blount County, sponsor for the camp. So is the goal to produce another Picasso or Monet among the county’s youth? “Not really,” said Lewey. But if one came along, who’d complain? That was
one of the drawing exercises from last year’s camp: to look at a painting by Picasso and one by Monet, then try to reproduce that style in subject matter of the camper’s own choosing. Results were, Lewey said, in a word, “interesting.” – Ron Gholson
