The 2018 high school football season was a successful one for a lot of teams in Blount County.

Oneonta, Cleveland, Susan Moore and J.B. Pennington all qualified for the playoffs. J.B. Pennington advanced to the second round of the state playoffs this season. Oneonta made a deep push all the way to the semifinals.

Larry “Pod” Patterson Player of the Year: Taveris Hill-Oneonta-SRQB

Taveris Hill (above) of Oneonta put together one of the most memorable seasons in county history. He passed for 1,581 yards with 19 touchdowns while completing 62 percent of his passes. Hill also rushed for 1,423 yards with 19 touchdowns. He averaged 8.6 yards per rush.

Hugh O’Shields Coach of the Year:
Phil Phillips – Oneonta – First Season 10-4

The Hugh O’Shields Coach of the Year Award is voted on annually by all eight coaches in Blount County. Phil Phillips is a first time winner of this award. Phillips was named head coach of the Redskins back in the spring and guided his alma mater to the fourth Round of the State Playoffs after back-to-back 3-7 seasons the last two years. Phillips was the offensive coordinator for the Redskins from 2007-2016.

Offensive Player of the Year:
Anthony Cervantes – Susan Moore – JR RB

Anthony Cervantes of Susan Moore put together another stellar year with the Bulldogs. Cervantes carried the ball 165 times for 1,231 yards and 12 touchdowns. He averaged 7.2 yards per carry.

Co-Defensive Players of the Year:
Beau Ragsdale – Oneonta – Soph LB;
Luke Cassity – J.B. Pennington – SR LB

Beau Ragsdale of Oneonta put together another great season for the Oneonta defense. Ragsdale had 153 total tackles, one sack, 12.5 tackles for loss, and one interception. Luke Cassity of J.B. Pennington had a stellar season as well for the Tigers. Cassity, the leader of the Tigers’ defense, put together 150 tackles and 11 tackles for loss.
