Alabama tribes represented at Hayden Middle School

Representatives from the Cherokee Tribe of Northeast Alabama and the Choctaw Nation were on hand at Hayden Middle School recently to discuss tribal customs and artifacts as a celebration of Native American Heritage Day.

The tribe members demonstrated traditional dance, bow-and-arrow technique, hatchet throwing, finger weaving, and creating corn husk dolls, medicine bags, and gourd rattles. The students were also treated to Native American song and storytelling. Students participated in the handson crafting and took home items created, along with shirts decorated to represent the tribes of Alabama.
