Active election year looms in 2012

Next year, 2012, is a Presidential election year. That alone makes it significant. Even more important from a local standpoint are nine state and county offices that will be in play this year.

Below is a first glimpse of offices to be filled in the order they will appear on the ballot, and several election-related dates.The Blount Countian will continue to cover 2012 elections as candidates announce for various offices in the weeks and months to come. State offices

Circuit judge, incumbent Steven King

District judge, incumbent Sherry Burns

Circuit clerk, incumbent Mike Criswell County offices

Probate judge/commission chairman, incumbent David Standridge

District 2 commissioner, incumbent Andy Neill

District 4 commissioner, incumbent Waymon Pitts (will not run again)

Blount County Board of Education superintendent, incumbent Jim Carr

Blount County Board of Education place 1 (Hayden), incumbent Craig Johnson

Blount County Board of Education place 2 (Blountsville), incumbent Jackie Sivley Important election dates

Presidential preference/statewide primary: Tuesday, March 13

Deadline to qualify for primary: Friday, Jan. 13

Deadline to file petition to run as independent: Tuesday, March 13

Primary runoff: Tuesday, April 24

General election: Tuesday, Nov. 6
