Roger Dale Gargus

Roger Dale Gargus, 76, died Feb. 28, 2024, after a long illness with colon cancer. He graduated from Oneonta High School in May of 1965. He then attended Auburn University and graduated in Sept. of 1969. Afterwards, he worked at Lincoln Memorial University where he taught Physical Education and Sports Management, as well as coaching baseball and wrestling. After his two year tenure at LMU, he began a long career in insurance, beginning at Traveler’s Insurance in May of 1972 and eventually opening his own agency in Oneonta in 1980. Since selling his insurance business, he moved to Jacksonville, Flo. to work for USFG for five years. He spent the remainder of his career working for various Gargus auto dealerships in Oneonta, Birmingham, and Trussville. He retired from Courtesy Buick GMC in 2006, moving to North Carolina until 2015. While in NC, he served as a Sunday School Superintendent and substitute teacher at the local high school. He and his wife Jennie moved to Trussville in 2015.

  Roger was preceded in death by his parents, Earl and Flora Nolin Gargus; brothers, Royce, Wayne, and Tommy. He is survived by his wife of 29 years, Jennie Alvis Gargus, of Trussville; two daughters, Amy Gargus Brunner (John) and Leah Gargus Kotar (Mike) of Oneonta and Huntsville, respectively; two stepchildren, Amy O’Brien Mascali (David) of Nashville, Tenn. and Ted O’Brien (Chelsea) of Snowmass, Col.; grandchildren, Logan Sipper (Rachel) and Reagan Sipper of Oneonta and Adam Kotar and Molly Kotar of Huntsville; sisters, Charlotte Battles (Jerry) of Columbia, Tenn. and his twin, Glenda Gargus, of Trussville, Ala.; sisters-in-law Polly Gargus of Oneonta and Melinda Gargus of Trussville. 

  A Celebration of Life Service was held at Lemley Funeral Home on Saturday, March 2, 2024, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in Oneonta, Ala. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Oneonta Cemetery and Beautification Society, P.O. Box 686 Oneonta, AL 35121.
