Loyd C. Arrington

Loyd C. Arrington passed away Oct. 25, 2025, at the
age of 79. He was born Sept. 18, 1946, to the late An-
drew C. and Pauline Arrington.
He was proceeded in death by his beloved wife of 53
years, Norma Hodges Arrington; sister-in-law, Susan
Stephenson.
He is survived by sons Andrew D. (Darien) Arrington
and L. Steven (Adrian) Arrington; brother Alan (Sherry)
Arrington; sister-in-laws Nancy (Douglas) Simmons and
Shirley (Michael) Thomason; grandsons Grant Arrington
and Grey Arrington; nieces Noelle (Chris) Moon, Brooke
(Tyler) Antonakos, Regina (Roger) Herron, Jessica (Jus-
tin) Simmons; nephews Rodney Simmons, Mark Fowler,
Bret (Alicia) Stephenson, and a host of great-nieces and
nephews.
Loyd grew up in Birmingham and attended Wood-
lawn High School. After High School, he served in the
United States Army as a Military Policeman (M.P.) where
Loyd received a Purple Heart while serving in Vietnam.
After his service, Loyd joined the Alabama Department
of Public Safety in 1968 as an Alabama State Trooper.
In 1977, Loyd transferred to the Alabama Bureau of
Investigation and resided in Dothan, Alabama where
he served until 2007 when he retired at the rank of
Captain. In 2009, Governor Bob Riley appointed Loyd as
Sheriff of Blount County where he served for 10 years
after running two successful re-election campaigns.
Loyd stepped away from law enforcement after 50 years
of service to care for his wife when her health failed.
Loyd enjoyed spending time with his family and
friends, fishing, and most especially spending time with
his grandsons. He served as a long-time Sunday School
teacher at Magnolia Freewill Baptist Church in Midland
City before returning to Blount County, and later an
active member of Pine Grove Baptist Church.
A celebration of life was held Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2025,
at 1 p.m. at Pine Grove Missionary Baptist Church with
Rev. Randy Hale officiating and Lemley Funeral Home
directing. The family received friends at the church
beginning at 11 a.m., prior to the service. Mr. Arrington
will be laid to rest at Oak Hill Cemetery in Oneonta.
The Blount County Sheriff’s Office served as pallbear-
