It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Frances Phillps Gibbs, 86, on Tuesday, May 6, 2025. Frances was born on Aug. 9, 1938, in Cleveland to Thomas and Sarah Phillips. She graduated from Cleveland High School in 1959, and resided in Oneonta (Allgood) for the majority of her life before moving to Opelika in 2017.
She was preceded in death by her husband Charlie in 2006; her parents Thomas and Sarah Phillips; her brothers Thomas, Willie Jay, and Joel; and her sisters Lois McCurdy, Jesseline Zapalac, and Lounette Coin. She is survived by her two daughters, Carla Cornelius (Troy) and Becky Ballas (Jerry); her sister Anne Bowlin; her grandchildren Eddy Cornelius (Hannah); Casey and Christian Page; Bryan Ballas; and her great-grandchildren Deason and Cruz Cornelius.
Frances always served and put others ahead of herself. She never complained nor hesitated in helping others in time of need, even if it was at a cost to her. Modeled after Christ, her compassion and servanthood is worthy of mention. She didn’t expect any praise or adoration. She only wanted to do all that she did as unto the Lord.
Frances didn’t shy away from being a light. A light that radiated with colors that even flowers would yearn for her beauty. Sparked by laughter and comfort, she was no stranger to providing rooms with smiles. Smiles that were as warm as her homemade biscuits and her peach cobbler. Cooking was her love language and many of you were blessed with enjoying one of her meals. She cooked with passion and love, similarly in the same way as she treated those around her. She provided when she didn’t have much. Weakness was afraid of her. Strength was encouraged by her. A legacy painted with love. A legacy that inspired others — and will continue to inspire all of us. Frances, Mama, Maw Maw — a loving wife, a nurturing mother, and a caring grandmother.
Flowers wilt each season, but come back stronger year after year. Though this flower has faded, the soil is rich and has prepared a foundation that will endure forever.
A special thank you to the care teams at The Harbor at Opelika and Compassus Bethany House.
Services were held Monday, May 12, at Oneonta Church of Christ (224 20th St, Oneonta, AL, 35121). Visitation began at 11:30 a.m. followed by the memorial service at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Oneonta Church of Christ.
