Celebrating 20 years of boosting children’s success in Blount County schools, the Blount County Education Foundation (BCEF) will flood WCRL 95.3 and 94.7 FM airwaves from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 27, for the 2018 Radiothon. Throughout the day, BCEF members, past grant winners, and those making donations will be featured on the program.
In honor of the foundation’s 20th year, the radiothon will include 20 grand prizes awarded during the broadcast. Anyone stopping by during this celebration will be able to enjoy homemade goodies that will be located under the tent in front of the radio station.
Executive director Mitchie Neel said, “It’s going to be a fun and rewarding day as we continue promoting academic excellence in Blount County schools.”
Since this is their 20th anniversary, BCEF will offer special Anniversary Celebration grants of $2,000. Teachers have the opportunity to apply for both the regular grants and the anniversary grants through Wednesday, Oct. 3.
All grant winners will be announced on Tuesday, Nov. 20.
Since 1998, the BCEF has provided more than $3.3 million to Blount County schools through grants and other programs. Last year the foundation awarded 157 classroom grants to teachers, supported the Summer Learning Program for all Blount County schools, and other great projects including Scholar’s Bowl, the visual arts contest, and the Youth Leadership Program.
Neel has seen firsthand how donations have had a positive influence on student’s academic progress. One fact Neel is especially proud to report is how those students participating in the Dreamcatchers Summer Program average four months growth in reading and six months growth in math. According to Neel, Blount County data has reflected the impact of the BCEF projects.
When considering making a donation, it is important to remember that no donation is too small; however, those making donations of $250 or more will be recognized as a Partner ($250), Named Grant Partner ($750), Signature Partner ($1,000), and Anniversary Partner ($2,000).
BCEF also has an Endowed Grant Program that allows larger contributions to create a permanent grant in someone’s honor or memory. These donations are $15,000 or $20,000.
Neel said, “We are thrilled to receive any donation. It does not matter how much a person gives. When we put it all together, it will make a huge impact.”
As the 2018 radiothon approaches, Neel encourages everyone to consider making a donation to help strengthen academic excellence in Blount County schools.
