2017 Sales Tax Holiday in effect this weekend



Alabama will hold its 12th sales tax holiday beginning at 12:01 a.m. Friday, July 21, and ending Sunday, July 23, at midnight. The holiday allows shoppers to buy certain school supplies, computers, and some clothing free of state sales tax. Local taxes as well are waived on qualifying items in Oneonta, Cleveland, Locust Fork, Hayden, and Snead, but not in Blountsville. Following are lists of items that qualify. The lists are marked as to whether they are all-inclusive or illustrative only.

School supplies (all-inclusive)
• art supplies (clay/glazes, acrylic/tempera/oil

paints, brushes for artwork, sketch and drawing
pads, watercolors)
• books with an ISBN number priced at $30 or
• binders
• blackboard chalk
• book bags
• cellophane tape
• compasses
• composition books
• crayons
• erasers

• folders
• glue/paste/paste sticks
• highlighters
• index cards and index card boxes
• instructional materials (reference
maps and globes, official required textbooks between $30 and $50)
• legal pads
• lunch boxes
• markers
• notebooks
• paper (loose leaf ruled, copy, graph,
tracing, manila, colored, poster board,
and construction)
• pencil boxes and other school supply boxes
• pencils and pencil sharpeners
• protractors
• rulers
• scissors
• writing tablets

Computers, software, and school computer supplies; single purchase limit of $750

• includes laptops, desktops or tower systems and devices such as a monitor, keyboard, mouse, and speakers sold as a package with the central processing unit (CPU). Devices/components not sold as part of a package with a CPU do not qualify for sales tax exemption.
