Unit system legislation fails passage out of committee

Legislation proposing a vote of county citizens in the 2020 election to convert Blount County government from the district system to the unit system failed to pass out of a House of Representatives committee for a vote of the full House as the 2019 legislative session neared its end.

Probate Judge Chris Green said a unanimous recommendation of the Blount County House delegation was required for the committee to consider reporting the measure out of committee, and that only three of the four-member delegation favored it. He had no further comment.

The proposal is now void unless it is re-introduced and passed in the 2020 Alabama legislative session.
