Day on the River 2010 is Saturday, June 19, at King’s Bend on the banks of the beautiful Locust Fork. This is not an outing but a watershed awareness event for kids.
It will be the 10th year Friends of the Locust Fork River has sponsored this happening, and it’s been bigger and better every time – with more activity stations, more children and parents, more learning, and more fun.
Certified canoe instruction, get-wet ecology, snakes, and more will be on the agenda. There will be fun and learning for county children in grades three to six who are accompanied by adults.
Preregistration is required by June 11; see www.flfr.org.
To register, e-mail dayontheriv
or call Susan 205-429-3240 with 1) names of children, 2) number of accompanying adults, and 3) contact phone numbers. (Please leave phone number twice if leaving a message.) Volunteers ninth grade to adults are welcome to join the fun. E-mail Sharon at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Returning partners in providing environmental activities include Birmingham Canoe Club, Alabama River Alliance, Alabama Water Watch, Cahaba River Society, Ruffner Mountain Nature Center, McWane Science Center, and more.
A few exciting, new activities are in the works. Many volunteers are needed to make this event happen – helpers with parking, registration, lunch, monitoring river safety, guiding kids through the activities, and assisting at some of the stations. As always, lunch is free for all participants and volunteers. To volunteer, contact Sharon Cook email@example.com.
Time is 8:15 to 3:30, though volunteers do not need to commit to the whole day.
New date for hike
Some folks will want to go slow and talk wildflowers. Others will scoot ahead to get in more playtime at the falls.
Saturday, May 29, is the new date for the annual moderate-to-difficult Cornelius Falls Hike. You’ll eat your brown-bag lunch on the sunny rocks. It’s a great time of year to play in the falls, so bring wading shoes and swim wear if you like.
