HONORING those who served

Big crowds lined the streets of Oneonta along the route of the Blount County Veterans Day Parade Saturday. Almost 40 entries and five high school bands participated in this year’s event, honoring those who served – and are serving – our country. The annual event is sponsored by Operation Grateful Heart. Walt Whitman said it best of veterans in his poem, ‘A Nation's Strength’ – ‘Not gold, but only man can make, A people great and strong; Men who, for truth and honor's sake, Stand fast and suffer long. Brave men who work while others sleep, Who dare while others fly – They build a nation's pillars deep, And lift them to the sky.’ - Rob Rice
