Guilty verdict and Casey to be profiled for national show

NBC Dateline will produce a two-hour show on the cold case murder of Desta Byrd of Bibb County and Blount County District Attorney Pamela Casey’s role in the prosecution.

A Bibb County jury on Friday afternoon found Jody Byrd, of Centreville, guilty of murder in the 1999 shooting death of his wife, Desta Byrd. Casey had been appointed as special prosecutor in September 2012 and assigned to the Bibb County case. Sentencing is set for December, and Casey will ask for the maximum of 99 years.

Byrd, 46, was on trial for the shooting death of his wife, 29-year-old Desta Dodson Byrd on Feb. 25, 1999. Byrd told investigators that he found her lying next to the driveway when he got home from work that night. Desta Byrd died from a single gunshot wound to the head.

Although her husband was the only suspect since the night of the murder, Byrd was not arrested until May of 2011. Friends and family formed JusticeFor-, a group dedicated in her memory to keeping the investigation alive.

The network has not yet announced the air date for the NBC Dateline episode.
