TRAFFORD FIRST BAPTIST will have its annual yard and bake sale Saturday, Oct. 2, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be something for everyone in the yard sale. CALVARY EPISCOPAL, on Sunday, Sept. 19, at 5 p.m., will present organist Samuel Burke Jr. in recital at the historical Hinners-Zimmer-Hand pipe organ situated in the church’s nave. The public is invited to the musical event and to a reception to follow in the parish hall.
Samuel Burke Jr. is the son of Sam and Mary Logan Burke of Rosa. He is organist at Grace Episcopal Church, Cullman, and a member of the Birmingham chapter of the American Guild of Organists. He holds degrees from Birmingham-Southern College and Westminster Choir College, Princeton, N.J. Burke has served as musician for churches in Alabama and in North Carolina and has been employed by public broadcasting studios WHQR in Wilmington, N.C., and WBHM in Birmingham.
The accomplished organist is a member of Calvary Church and served as consultant for the procurement and installation of the organ, a gift from The Chapel of The Cross, Chapel Hill, N.C. The recital will celebrate the eighth birthday of Calvary Episcopal Church. The church is located at 1002 Park Avenue, Oneonta, and visible from Ala 75 behind the old Blount Memorial Hospital.
