Several wrestlers from Hayden and Susan Moore qualified and medaled at the state tournament this season.

The Wildcats had seven wrestlers to qualify at the North Super Sectionals held at the CrossPlex in Birmingham. Hayden finished fifth of the 29 schools competing 1A-5A. Amongst the seven wrestlers were Evan Phillips, Ryan St. John, Kaleb Burford, Ty Judd, Colby Hallmark, Linus Piper, and Trevor Reno.

These seven traveled to the Von Braun Center in Huntsville to compete in the state tournament. There they finished 10th out of the 54 1A-5A participating schools. Overall, 160-pound senior Hallmark placed second in his division. St. John, a 126-pound senior placed third in his division. Phillips, a 113-pound eighth grader, finished in fifth place.

The Wildcats completed their season with a 43-8 record in dual matches and made the final four in the state dual championships, but lost to state champion, Scottsboro, in the semi-finals.

Susan Moore had three athletes to make it to the North Super Sectionals: Trent Robertson, Jose Calderon, and Nick Calderon. Robertson, a 113-pound junior, placed third in his weight class. N. Calderon, a 285-pound sophomore, placed fourth in his class. His season ended with a 23-10 record. J. Calderon, a 132-pound freshman, placed sixth and completed his season 19-12.

Robertson’s success continued at the state tournament where he placed third 1A-5A. He finished with a 29-4 record.
