Boots vs. badges

Oneonta police and fire departments teamed up with LifeSouth Community Blood Centers for the second annual Boots vs. Badges Blood Drive last Thursday.

Chairperson Judy Underwood (below) said, “Last year we had a record number in donations for this area. The friendly banter between the police and fire departments is all in fun, but we are most interested in the life-giving capabilities this drive generates.”

Having to redeem themselves for last year’s loss to the police department, Oneonta Fire and Rescue pulled off a huge victory in last Thursday’s blood drive.

Emergency responders said the turnout of donors exceeded all expectations as a total of 41 pints were collected. The final tally of 24 -17 declared firefighters as the winners of this year’s Boots vs. Badges.

Of course, the real winners are those who will receive blood donations. Firefighter/paramedic Jonathan Ledbetter (above) said, “We think this a great opportunity. A single donation has the potential to save three lives. That’s our mission, to save lives, and partnering with LifeSouth makes perfect sense.”
