BILLY RAY ROBERTS, age 92, of Taits Gap, passed away at home surrounded by his beloved family on July 29, 2019. Born in McClarty, Ala., he was the son of the late Wade Hampton and Vera Lang Roberts. He is preceded in death by brothers, J.W., Howard “Peanut,” and Wade Roberts.
Mr. Roberts attended Eargle School and graduated from Susan Moore High School in 1945.
Mr. Roberts became a Christian Aug. 12, 1944, at a summer revival at Macedonia Baptist Church. He developed quite a reputation as a singer and served as singing chairman for Macedonia Baptist Church during the 1940s and 1950s. Mr. Roberts was married to the love of his life, Annie Ruth Cornelius, for 62 years. He was ordained as a deacon Nov. 24, 1957, and served on numerous church committees. He and his family moved their membership to Tait’s Gap Baptist Church Sept. 8, 1968. He retired in 1989 from Republic Iron & Steel Company at Gadsden after 32 years of service. He greatly enjoyed farming with his Farmall “Cub” tractor, spending time with his cherished granddaughters, and attending family events.
He is survived by his wife Annie Ruth Roberts of Tait’s Gap; daughter Tamie (Richard) Blythe of Madison; daughter Rhonda (Wray) Dillard of Florence; son Joel Brian (Sandy) Roberts of Gardendale; grandchildren Anna Dillard, Emily Dillard, Erin Blythe, and Kristen Roberts; and sister Ima Ruth Whited.
The family received friends at Tait’s Gap Baptist Church on Wednesday, July 31, with visitation from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m., funeral at 11 a.m., and burial following at Oak Hill Cemetery. Brother Neal Whited officiated.
The family would like to thank Dr. John Smith for his kind care during this time as well as Alacare Home Health & Hospice and their caregivers.
Pallbearers were Eddie Hill, Mike Hill, Barry Roberts, Doug Roberts, Jimmy Vick and Homer Young. Honorary pallbearers were nephews Larry Roberts and Tommy Roberts, and the deacon body of Tait’s Gap Baptist Church.
