Bids awarded for Southeastern stadium



At a special meeting last week, the Blount County Board of Education awarded two bids in relation to the construction of the football stadium at Southeastern School.

The base bid (seating) of $163,700 and an alternate (press box) of $56,000 was awarded to Stadium Pros of Oxford. Construction on the new stadium began earlier this spring and the facility is expected to be ready for the first game in August.

In other business, the board acted on the recommendation of Supt. Jim Carr and:

•approved six summer field trip requests, all are to be taken during the month of June.

•adopted the entire list of state-adopted textbooks for English and social studies.

•extended the contract of Jeff Miller for tutoring Susan Moore High students who are at-risk or in danger of dropping out of school.

•agreed to pay a stipend, not to exceed a total of $900, to each of the nine members of the Hayden Primary School Leadership team for a one-day collaborative planning session for the 2014-2015 Continuous Improvement Plan.

•agreed to pay a stipend, not to exceed a total of $1,050, to each of the seven members of the J.B. Pennington ECIP team for attending leadership planning day this summer. The stipends will be paid from the school’s Title I FY2014 funds.

•agreed to pay a stipend of $125 each to 24 Susan Moore Elementary teachers attending one day of professional development at the school this summer. The stipends, not to exceed a total of $3,000, will be paid will be paid from the school’s Title I FY2014 funds.

•contracted with Kirk Smith to work 15 days this summer to fulfill the Career and Technical Education Extended Contract that was approved by the State Department of Education. The contract shall not exceed $5,035.

•agreed to pay Jenny Walker and Debby Doss $150 each for providing custodial services for the 2014 Hayden Middle School Beauty Pageant. They will be paid from the school’s local funds.

•accepted resignations from Ronald Parkman, Appalachian High custodian, and Jodi A. Powell, Hayden Middle School teacher.

•accepted the retirement resignation of Kathy Petty, Hayden Middle School aide.

•granted leaves of absence to Sheila Kay Benefield, Appalachian School aide, and Sara Martin, Blount County Learning Center teacher.

•entered into an agreement with BankCard Services Worldwide to provide e-payment services for online payments for local schools. HomeTown Bank will provide the landing checking account for these services.

Finally, the board hired Blake Dailey, Andrew Hawkins, Brody McAlpine, Austin Myrick, and Matthew Pelt to assist with summer maintenance duties on a temporary, as-needed basis this summer. They will be paid at the board-approved hourly rate for temporary and/or parttime employees.

Present at the May 15 meeting were board members Jackie Sivley, Chris Latta, and William Ferry, Carr, board secretary Karla Latham and several visitors. Board members Bruce McAfee and Ken Benton did not attend.
