All-County Football Team

The 2009 high school football season was a productive one for Blount County schools. Four teams made the playoffs with two advancing to the second round. One team made the quarterfinals and several players received recognition from the Alabama Sports Writers Association (ASWA) for their accomplishments.

This week, we release The Blount Countian’s
All- County Football Team. Actually, this week we reveal the first team with the second team and honorable mention sections coming out next week.

Susan Moore quarterback Justin Hawkins is the Larry ‘Pod’ Patterson Player of the Year. The junior had an outstanding year, completing 161 of 269 passing for 16 touchdowns and six interceptions and rushing for 914 yards and six touchdowns on 12 carries. He will continue to give opposing defensive coordinators fits for one more year.

Appalachian advanced to the quarterfinals for the second year in a row and Eagle linebacker Zach Blythe was a big reason why. He led the team with 103 tackles, including 21 for loss, and five sacks. Zach had five takeaways (three fumbles, two interceptions), blocked a punt, and had a pair of returns for touchdowns. He simply made game-changing plays all over the field.

Naming Eagle head coach Ernie Willingham as the Hugh O’Shields Coach of the Year was an easy choice. Willingham guided the Eagles to their second consecutive appearance in the quarterfinals (the only two in school history) and led the 1A school to back-to-back 10-win seasons for the first time ever. He is now 74-51 in 12 seasons as a head coach, including 43-27 in six years at Appalachian.
