New coach named at Southeastern
BLOUNT COUNTY BOARD OF EDUCATION
Drew Barnett was officially hired as the new football coach for Southeastern School at Monday’s meeting of the Blount County Board of Education.
Barnett, a native of Florence and a graduate of Rogers High School, was an assistant coach at Locust Fork last year and had previously worked as an assistant at Hueytown. He will also be teaching social studies.
In other business, the board acted on the recommendation of Supt. Jim Carr and:
•allowed four students to transfer to the Jefferson County system with the stipulation that the Blount County board assumes no liability in relation to the releases.
•approved seven field trip requests – six for basketball teams to attend camps and one for FFA members to attend a convention.
•allowed Blountsville Elementary to contract with Herf Jones for the 2014 yearbook publication. The contract will be paid from the school’s local funds.
•contracted with Paige P. Moore for speech language and development services for multiple students for up to eight weeks during the months of June and July. She will be paid $30 per hour from IDEA Part B and/or general funds.
•contracted with vision impairment teacher Jamie Hampton to provide extended school year services for multiple students two times per week from June 11 through June 30. She will be paid $30 per hour from IDEA Part B and/or general funds.
•contracted with Alicia Thompson to provide extended school year services for up to five hours per week for six weeks during June and July. She will be paid $25 per hour from IDEA Part B and/or general funds.
•contracted with Brooke Mahaffey to provide extended school year services at Hayden Primary for a total of 12 hours during the months of June and July. She will be paid $25 per hour from IDEA Part B and/or general funds.
•contracted with Kimberly A. Smith to provide extended school year language services for multiple students during the months of June and July. She will be be paid $30 per hour from IDEA Part B and/or general funds.
•contracted with Blackwater Technologies for central fire station alarm monitoring. A copy of the contract is on file in the superintendent’s office.
•contracted with Vickie Strong (Hayden High), Raymon Moore (Susan Moore High), and Mary Mullins (Locust Fork High and Elementary) to provide summer custodial service through June 18.
•contracted with Jack Thomason to strip and wax the floors at Susan Moore Elementary. The total amount of this contract, not to exceed $1,000, will be paid from the school’s local funds.
•contract with Amanda Hernandez and Libby Moon (substitute) to provide nursing services on an as-needed basis the 2013 Blount County Education Foundation Summer Camps. Each will be paid $25 per hour from foundation grants.
•entered into an agreement with Franklin Covey Client Services Inc. to continue year two and three of Cleveland Elementary’s Leader in Me Leadership Program.
•entered into an agreement with Kelly Services Inc. to the assignment of temporary employees. Substitute employees will be assigned in the following positions: teachers, para-professionals, Child Nutrition Program, janitorial/custodial, and nurses.
•awarded the bus bid opened on May 24 to Transportation South for the purchase of multi-needs buses.
•awarded the Appalachian gym floor bid opened on May 30 to Gym Service & Installation Inc.
•awarded the Cleveland High copier bid ($3,495) to Federalgraphics LLC.
•hired Christian Chavez and Seth Aderhold to assist with cabinet installation in the ACCESS Labs and Hayden and Locust Fork high schools during the month of June. Each will be paid at the board-approved hourly rate.
•approved up to 10 additional days of summer work for Locust Fork High information specialist Vicki Wallis. She will be paid at her regular daily rate from the school’s general fund.
•accepted the resignations of Southeastern special education teacher Kyle Kilgore; Appalachian math teacher Amy Love; and Hayden special education teacher Danielle Mixon.
•transferred Hayden Middle School teacher Cynthia Leah Rogers to Cleveland Elementary; Title I instructional aide Katrina Jennings to computer applications teacher, Susan Moore High; Blountsville Elementary speech language pathologist Paige Moore to a preschool teaching position for the RISE program.
•hired Meghan Kilgo, science teacher, Locust Fork High; Kristen Nichole Gargus, family and consumer science teacher, Appalachian; Tom B. Dake, English language arts teacher, J.B. Pennington; Cory R. Franklin, math teacher, Luke Skylar McHan, music teacher/band director, Brittany Owens, science teacher, and Patrick Sularin, library media specialist, Susan Moore High; Sara Amanda Smith, special education teacher, Carmen Williams, office aide, Hayden Elementary; Heather Carter, science teacher, Jamie Lee McReynolds, English language arts teacher, Susan S. Parker, guidance counselor, Christopher David Sosebee, social science teacher, Hayden High; Mary Hollis, special education teacher, Cheryl Kelly, math teacher, Southeastern.
Finally, the board approved the transfer of Hayden Middle School teacher Shawn Marsh to a teaching/ assistant principal position at Susan Moore Elementary.
Present at the June 3 meeting were Carr, board members Bruce McAfee, Craig Johnson, William Ferry, Jackie Sivley, and Chris Latta, assistant superintendent Rodney Green, board secretary Karla Latham, and several visitors.
The board’s next meeting has been scheduled for Wednesday, June 19, at 1 p.m.
