Urgent Care South, a new clinic currently under construction, will open May 1, serving west Blount, Hayden and surrounding areas. Urgent Care South, a new clinic currently under construction, will open May 1, serving west Blount, Hayden and surrounding areas. Urgent Care South, a 10-room, 7600-sq.-ft. clinic described as a comprehensive urgent care medical facility, will open for business May 1 next year, according to Dr. Mike Patton, who will have his primary office there.

The clinic is located on Smoke Rise Trail just off Ala 160 near I- 65. It adjoins the Traditions Bank parking lot. The clinic had originally been planned for construction this past summer with a September opening date, but was delayed.

Urgent care refers to delivery of medical care ouside of a hospital emergency department, usually on an unscheduled, walk-in basis. Urgent care centers are primarily used to treat patients who have an injury or illness that needs immediate care but is not serious enough to warrant a visit to an emergency department.

“It’s for people who don’t have a doctor nearby or who have an injury that is serious but not life threatening,’ said Patton. Examples include lacerations, broken bones, severe sprains, high blood pressure, or sicknesses, Patton said.

“Of course, we could and would take care of a dire emergency if necessary,” he added.

In addition to urgent care, Patton said he has provided space in the clinic for a pharmacy, but that it will not be activated immediately. He said he expects that over time he will invite a cardiologist and a gastroenteroloist to share offices that he will make available in the clinic on a day-ortwo a-week basis.

“I’m excited about developing a presence here, and taking new patients from the area. I look forward to serving individuals, families, and children of the west Blount and Hayden areas – from infants to senior adults,” Patton said.

Patton said his medical training is in internal medicine and that he has been working for several years in the urgent care discipline. He currently practices at Narrows Health and Wellness Clinic in Shelby County, south of Birmingham.

Patton said his intention is to have a grand opening event on the weekend prior to the actual opening of the clinic. Tours will be given and refreshments served, he said. Further notice will be given this coming spring.

He added that any prospective patients who would like to preregister can do so by dropping a brief letter or postcard to the address below requesting a preregistration packet to be mailed to them at the home mailing address provided.
