This is possible due to the great support of our partners and donors who have contributed to the Blount County Education Foundation.” said Mitchie Neel.

The Blount County Education Foundation announced the 2011- 2012 grant winners Thursday on the WCRL morning show. Classroom grants were awarded to 128 projects in the amount of $98,919, an increase of $1527 over the previous year. The foundation has awarded 1124 classroom grants since 1998, plus an extra $16,870 in 2009 in awards divided among all teachers in the school system; the cumulative grant grand total is $804,734.

In September of this year, the foundation conducted its annual Radio-thon and signed off the air with more than $100,000 in pledges. That total is now $103,482 and includes some new endowed grants. The money donated at the Radio-thon helps make the classroom grant-project possible.

The Foundation received 220 grant applications, each scored without name of school or applicant. A record 27 signature grants ($1000) and three new endowed signature grants were awarded this year. The foundation was also excited to announce its 1000th classroom grant.

Ten grants were awarded to Appalachian; six to Blountsville Elementary; 13 to Cleveland Elementary; six to Cleveland High; 10 to Hayden Primary; eight to Hayden Elementary; five to Hayden Middle; nine to Hayden High; nine to J.B. Penningon; 12 to Locust Fork Elementary; seven to Locust Fork High; nine to Southeastern Elementary; eight to Susan Moore Elementary; eight to Susan Moore High; five to the Learning Center; and three to the Career Technical Center. Balloons and certificates were delivered to each winner following the announcement, and teachers were thrilled to be awarded these grants to help with various projects.

“The school system is very fortunate to have the Blount County Education Foundation to provide the great resources through these grants each year. The classroom resources equip our teachers with teaching resources they would not have if not for these grants. I am grateful to the foundation and all its supporters for making this possible,” said Jim Carr, county school superintendent.
