Snead traffic stop leads to drug bust

by Rob Rice

Snead police officer A.J. Blethen stopped a latemodel pickup truck last Wednesday for what seemed to be a routine equipment violation.

Blethen noticed the strong smell of marijuana coming from the vehicle and also noted that the driver seemed to be very nervous.

He had reason to be.

After getting consent to search the vehicle, the officer discovered more than 20 pounds of marijuana in a plastic garbage bag on the floor of the passenger side. The marijuana, with an estimated street value of more than $10,000, was compressed into 10 bricks.

The driver of the truck, a 23-year-old Hispanic, was found to be in the country illegally and is being held in the Blount County Correctional Facility.
