Sunshine Law designed to keep government open
First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
      Americans have traditionally wanted openness in government. Because the First Amendment to the United States Constitution was a “weak weapon” in maintaining that openness, as the Alabama Press Association’s legal manual puts it, state governments moved to protect it.

Open meetings suit filed against the Montgomery Board of Education
      A former candidate for superintendent has sued the Montgomery County Board of Education alleging violations of Alabama Open Meetings Act. In his suit, Clay Slagle, claims the board met in secret during the selection process and later in discussing the superintendent’s performance. Slagle currently serves as chief operations officer for Montgomery Public Schools.

Snead seniors ask council to strengthen building guidelines
      Speaking as a concerned citizen and senior center employee, Barbara Williams asked the Snead Town Council to tighten requirements for those using the center. Williams presented a list of 12 tasks she asked the council to adopt for those renting the center. She had two pages of reported abuses and suggested implementation stapled to the list.

Warrior council nixes motion to rescind tax ordinance
      The Warrior Town Council, having failed last meeting to introduce a motion to rescind its Dec. 7 tax ordinance affecting west Blount County, last night succeeded in getting a motion to rescind and a second before the council, only to have it fail in a 3-3 tie vote.

Mitchem backs $1 billion state roads, jobs plan
County could get $230,000 yearly...
      Sen. Hinton Mitchem of Union Grove announced that he is supporting legislation in Montgomery to create a $1 billion road construction progam that would affect every Alabama county and create more than 30,000 jobs. Mitchem represents Senate District 11, which includes Marshall, southern Madison, and the northwestern quarter of Blount County.

Oneonta rezones, sets public hearing for location of new senior center
      Following a public hearing with no comments and a unanimous recommendation from the city’s planning commission, the Oneonta City Council voted to rezone 0.83 acres across state highway 75 from Walmart to business from residential. Mayor Darryl Ray detailed that the rezoning affects an approximately 50-foot-wide addition to property already so zoned.

      The primary election for Blount County district attorney figures to be a hotly contested race with four candidates currently competing for the Republican nomination. No Democrat has announced an intention to run for the job, and the rumor mills are so far silent for the Democratic camp.

Heart Day at St.Vincent’s
      St. Vincent’s Blount joins other hospitals included in the St. Vincent’s Health System in hosting the annual Heart Day program Feb. 20. The event is scheduled on all St. Vincent’s campuses from 6 a.m. to 11 a.m. and is designed for adults ages 18 and older, including both cardiac patients and others.

      Members of the Locust Fork High School student chapter of the Alabama Wildlife Federation welcomed two LFHS graduates to their monthy meeting Thursday, Jan. 21. Both excelled in the Walmart BFL Fishing Series, winning money and merchandise while living their dreams.
