Kay Ivey to speak on gubernatorial campaign
Update from the chamber of commerce
      State Treasurer Kay Ivey (Republican) will be the featured speaker at the monthly chamber breakfast scheduled at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 24, at Twin Oaks. Sponsored by New Beacon Hospice, this breakfast has been changed to Tuesday to avoid conflicting with the Thanksgiving holiday.

      The Blount County Board of Education accepted a bid for lighting Appalachian High School’s baseball and softball fields during last week’s meeting.

      The Mayor and Council of the Town of Blountsville met in regular session Monday, Oct. 19. Present with Mayor Randy Millwood were council members Michael Glass, Barry Smith, Kenneth Wilson, and Ken Mullins. Council member Marlin Murphree was absent.

Snead council approves tax abatement and purchases
      The Snead Town Council approved resolution 2009-06 granting a tax abatement to the more recent Quality Mills owner Michael Dendy. The abatement, which runs until 2011 unless extended, transfers the original abatement to the current owner. The council introduced the resolution at its final October meeting.

      The Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) has released the enrollment figures and the new region and area alignments for the 2010-2012 athletic seasons.

Bulldogs come to life in second half
      A dominant second half carried Susan Moore into the second round as the Bulldog defense hammered visiting Walter Wellborn for a 30-20 victory last Friday night. The Bulldogs looked to be in trouble early. Panther running back Delrickus Rhoden ran all over the home team in the first half with 245 yards and three touchdowns.

Partners in Crime Stoppers
      Three of the prime movers in launching the Blount County Crime Stoppers program met at the jail last week to transfer a grant check for $6,000 from state discretionary funds arranged by Rep. Elwyn Thomas to Sheriff Loyd Arrington.

Retake Cleveland – take two
      On Monday Nov. 2, the recently formed group Retake Cleveland gathered again to discuss recent and ongoing actions taken within the town’s government. Despite this being only their second formal gathering, this privately funded and determined group had over 50 residents in attendance.

Commission eyes west Blount sewer extension, Freedom Ranch proposal
In November work session...
      Cynthia Wingo, director of the Blount County Industrial Development Alliance, recommended to the Blount County Commission at its monthly work session last week that it apply for a Community Development Block Grant in order to construct a 2,200-foot sewer extension in West Blount Industrial Park.

Industrial Development Board elects new officers
      In a hastily-called meeting last Thursday, the Blount County Industrial Development Board met in a brief session in which chairman Terry Lewis and vice chairman Bobby Lowe both resigned. Both tendered their resignations verbally; both said they wish to continue to serve as members of the board, without officer status.

Museum features Fendley photography exhibit
      The late Jack Fendley, shown above with some of his photos, needs no introduction to many Oneontans. He was the co-owner of Fendley Furniture Company, founded by his father, Sid. He was the city’s longest-serving mayor, holding the office 26 years, from 1962 to 1988.

Tale of the Blue Bottle Tree
      This unusual tree festooned with cobalt blue bottles is on display in the window of Blount County Memorial Museum. It is a sight to see, and there’s quite a tale behind it. H1N1 flu shots available Friday
      Blount County Health Department has received a limited supply of the H1N1 flu vaccine, and its staff will hold a flu clinic there Friday, Nov. 13, between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. or until the vaccine is depleted. There is no charge for the H1N1 vaccine. The health department does not have any of the regular seasonal flu vaccine and will distribute only the H1N1 vaccine this Friday.
