Oneonta High alumni to have 1960s decade reunion

What began as an idea is now a reality. In February of this year, Celia Cheney Ellis sent to individual reunion organizers letters exploring interest in a decade-reunion of Oneonta High School classes 1960-1970.

Representatives met at Limestone Lodge to discuss potential interest, feasibility, logistics, and possible dates and locations for such a large event. Although there was some apprehension about planning the event in only seven months, committee members felt it could be done.

They began compiling contact information for the nearly 700 OHS alumni from the ‘60s decade. Individual class reunion organizers maintain alumni contact information, but the material needed reworking. The lists were purged, updated, and gathered into one master mailing list. Invitations were designed, printed with supplies and logistical support from a local business, and mailed in mid-May.

The reunion committee, with technical assistance from Larry Clowdus, designed and purchased a website (www.ohs60sdecade.com) to provide additional information about the reunion. The website also allows interaction and connectivity for ‘60s decade alumni who register.

Decade-reunion activities will begin Saturday, Oct. 10, with a special service to honor deceased alumni. “Roll Call for the Absent” service will be held at 4 p.m. at Lester Memorial United Methodist Church and is open to all who wish to attend.

The reunion itself is scheduled for 6 p.m. the same day, Oct. 10, at Twin Oaks. The planned casual evening of fun includes food, ‘60s-era music, memorabilia, antique car displays, and plenty of time to renew friendships and share memories. Spouses are invited.

Deadline for alumni to send acceptances by web is Sept. 10. Alumni for 1960 through 1970 can respond on the reunion website by using the RSVP link; by calling Larry Clowdus 205-625-4803 or Becky Gargus 205-274-4055; or by emailing lclowdus@otelco.net or bgar gus000@yahoo. Early RSVPs will ensure that the reunion committee will have responders’ personalized nametags and memory books ready. Reservations will be complete upon receipt of payment ($30 per person).
