Locust Fork senior quarterback Kyle Smith looks to his coach for the play call, and perhaps for a little relief from the heat, during last week’s 7-on-7 Invitational Tournament at Oneonta’s Gilbreath Stadium. Local schools Appalachian, Locust Fork, Oneonta, and Susan Moore all played well but LaFayette, Ga., won the event, which featured 16 teams from throughout the state. LaFayette defeated Lincoln in the finals while Springville finished third and Pinson Valley finished fourth. High school football practice in Alabama starts Aug. 3 and the season kicks off Aug. 27 or 28. More...
Town of Cleveland

“Blount County is business friendly,” stated Cynthia Wingo, executive director of the Blount County Economic Development Board, with hopes that some of that business stays within the town limits of Cleveland. Business owner David Hornsby, along with Wingo and Jim Searcy, vice president of the Metro Development Board, presented the expansion plan of Hornsby Steel to the Cleveland Town Council. More...

Editorial
Cleveland is an inviting small town like so many others in the rural south, its modest, well-kept homes reflecting its pride of place and contrasting with newer, grander residences, a number, again like many the country over, products of extravagance and victims of foresclosure in the present economic meltdown. As is the case elsewhere, residents are proud of their schools and churches, their parks and municipal structures, their fire department. Their innate warmth and kindness extend to their neighbors and other fellow citizens. More...
Recent Oneonta High School graduates Casey O’Toole (left) and Paul Harris participated in the 60th annual Press Thornton Future Masters Tournament in Dothan last month. O’Toole, who has signed to play golf at Samford University next year, shot 71- 75-69 for a total of 215 – good enough for a ninth-place finish and seven shots off the lead. Harris, who has signed to play golf for Central Alabama Community College, shot 73-73-71 for a total of 217 to finish 15th. More...

What does this mean?
Background Scripture: Deuteronomy 16:1-8. Devotional Reading: 1 Corinthians 5:1-8. Just as children, youth, and some adults ask why we have to obey God’s commandments, so there are also those who question why we “must” celebrate certain Christian holy days (with the exception of Christmas, of course). So far as I know, most religions – perhaps all religions – have days of special remembrance and celebration. More...
