“Knockout” is the variety name of these hardy roses planted as a landscaping project of Blountsville First United Methodist Church. Seventy-five bushes were planted in three beds, two of them visible in the photo. The first is a line fronting the fellowship hall and extending toward the white frame sanctuary across the street. The other is a circular planting visible around the street light in the background. The roses were planted by various church members who, over a period of months, formed an ad hoc landscaping crew until the project was complete. More...

Churches in the Hayden area will collaborate again this year to support their four local public schools with a community-wide, back-to-school supplies and funding drive. The half-dozen-odd churches are coming off an effort last year which provided school supplies to 175 families in the area and a check of over $500 to each of the four schools, according to drive organizer Jeremy Powell, pastor of First Baptist Church of Hayden. With more than 50 general and specialty magazines regularly received, the Oneonta Public Library provides a kalaidoscope of materials that can give to readers hours of reading pleasure as well as topical information. Birmingham resident Robert Thomason has lent part of his Early American Pattern Glass for display to the public at the Blount County Memorial Museum. The artifacts are the fruits of his more than 30 years of collecting these unique art pieces. Early American Pattern Glass, or “pressed glass,” came into being around 1830 out of a need for more affordable glassware. The Oneonta Redskins are hosting the second annual 7-on-7 Invitational Tournament this week at Gilbreath Stadium and one change has been made since last week’s story. Fairview and Guntersville have swapped place in the pool drawing. Guntersville is now in Pool A with Springville, Susan Moore, and Hayden B. We observed Independence Day last week. Grills smoked and fireworks popped as we celebrated our freedom. For some reason I found myself remembering a July 4th from a few years back.
