Update from the chamber of commerce
State Attorney General King will be next speaker at chamber breakfast
      Troy King, Alabama’s attorney general, will be the featured speaker at the monthly Blount County-Oneonta Chamber of Commerce breakfast scheduled for Wednesday, July 22, beginning at 7:30 a.m. at Twin Oaks. The program will be sponsored by Tyson Foods, an excellent corporate citizen that is involved in a number of worthy local causes.

Tim James brings campaign for governor to Oneonta
      Tim James, one of six Republican candidates for the gubernatorial nomination in 2010, addressed the county Republican Committee meeting at the Frank Green office building last Thursday, with a message of fiscal responsibility in state government and support of the activist conservative wing of the Republican Governors Association. Before the meeting, James stopped by The Blount Countian for an interview on his candidacy.

Oneonta continues with employment/personnel issues
      The Oneonta City Council placed additional responsibility on its firefighters to pay the city should they obtain training at city expense and soon move to another city’s department. Councilors approved an employment contract, which requires firefighters to remain with the city two years or pay the city for training they have received at city expense.

Fifth Blount cemetery named to national registry
      McDonald-Chitwood Cemetery is the fifth cemetery in Blount County named to the Alabama Historic Cemetery Register, a prestigious listing of historic cemeteries in the state. The Alabama Historical Commission considers historic cemeteries particularly worthy of preservation and appreciation and deserving of this special recognition, awarded thus far to only 303 cemeteries statewide.

Canadian company files for mining permit on Rosa Mine
Comment period until Aug.1...
      The MCoal Corporation, a metallurgical coal company based in Vancouver, British Columbia, has filed an application with the Alabama Surface Mining Commission to mine coal at a site in Blount County known as the Rosa Mine.
