Much has been made of the outstanding display of Cahaba Lilies in the Cahaba River at Hargrove Bend in Bibb County, within the boundaries of the Cahaba River National Wildlife Refuge. Of lesser fame but comparable beauty are beds growing in the Locust Fork River in Blount County. Two known populations occur in the Standridge Bend area on the lower river, with two other stands farther upstream in the Susan Moore area. Bloom time in Blount County is around June 1. More...
“Tax abatements have come to be viewed as a right. You’ve got to pay to play. If you don’t respond with that as a minimum incentive, you’re not going to get that second look – heck, you’re not going to get the first look – because all your competitors are going to offer them.” – Consultant Ed Gardner Sr.

The Blount County Commission and the county Industrial Development Board learned last week about the range of incentives that can be offered to prospective businesses interested in moving to Blount County. Presentations were made at Limestone Springs Golf Club. More...

A major element of Sheriff Loyd Arrington’s second-phase goals for county law enforcement is to mount a countywide crimestoppers program. The program would provide rewards for anonymous telephone tips and information leading to the arrest and conviction of criminal offenders, he told the Rotary Club Monday. Life throws some surprising punches. I have had to stop the clinic for veterans – The Old Oak Tree – as of June 1. Due to my own medical issues and those of other family members, there really is no option to do otherwise at this time. It has meant so much to me to be a part of the community in this way. The support of The Blount Countian has been key in letting people know more about the emotional issues faced by veterans, and I thank you so much. More...
DIZZY DEAN DISTRICT TOURNAMENT
Despite losing their first games, the all-star teams from Snead and Oneonta fought their way back in last week’s district tournament at Oneonta to advance to the area tournament. Snead made the more impressive run by advancing all the way to the finals before falling to Albertville in the championship game. Snead opened the tournament with a tough, 7-6 loss to Geraldine. Oneonta received a bye in the opening round and faced Geraldine in round two, losing a 9-7 game that sent the host team into the loser’s bracket. More...
