Vaughn has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. During the nine weeks of training, the soldier studied the Army mission, history, tradition and core values, physical fitness, and received instruction and practice in basic combat skills, military weapons, chemical warfare and bayonet training, drill and ceremony, marching, rifle marksmanship, armed and unarmed combat, map reading, field tactics, military courtesy, military justice system, basic first aid, foot marches, and field training exercises. In the state legislative session just concluded, a bill was passed allowing any municipality with a population of 1000 or more to hold a local election to approve or disapprove local sale of alcoholic beverages. Blount, Randolph, and Clay counties were excluded from the bill on the motion of their elected state representatives. In Blount County's case, the action to exclude was taken by state Rep. Elwyn Thomas. The bill was House Bill 175, sponsored by Representative James Martin of Chilton County. More ... Herbert Gargus opened Mountain Markets with the idea of giving local yard-, garage-, and rummage-salers a place to hawk their wares. Located on county road 29 near its intersection with U.S. 231, Mountain Markets features bathrooms, a snack bar, and lots of space for those wishing to sell almost anything.
