Flowers placed at the Blount County Veterans Memorial show the striking red, white, and blue of the United States of America. The memorial, located on the front lawn of the Blount County Courthouse, was dedicated on Nov. 11, 1992, Veterans Day. The monument, which was sponsored by local organizations The American Legion, Disabled American Veterans, and Veterans of Foreign Wars and their auxiliaries, lists the county’s dead or presumed dead from World War I through the Vietnam War. – Rob Rice More...

Registration begins today, May 27, for Oneonta Public Library's summer reading program. Designed for children aged pre-K through sixth grade, the theme this year is "Be Creative at your Library." Commissioner Ron Sparks of the Alabama Department of Agriculture and Industries is speaking today, May 27, at the monthly Blount County/Oneonta Chamber of Commerce breakfast at Twin Oaks. The commissioner, who is sponsored by Hometown Bank, will speak at 7:30 a.m. Sparks is completing his second term as commissioner and has announced that he will seek the Democratic Party nomination for governor of Alabama in 2010. HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL
All six schools in the Blount County system got together for the annual Blount County Spring Jamboree, held on Susan Moore’s Larry “Pod” Patterson Field. After two nights of play, J.B. Pennington and Susan Moore emerged undefeated. Playing on Thursday evening, Pennington opened up the jamboree with a 14-8 victory over Appalachian. Appalachian then fell by the same 14-8 margin to Cleveland. Pennington then returned to the field and picked up a close 7-6 win over Cleveland. More...
