No one was seriously injured in a two-vehicle accident that happened last Thursday just after 7 a.m. on Ala 75 near Remlap. The Hallman Pest Control truck pictured above was hit from behind after stopping for a school bus, according to police reports. The accident was one of three that occurred in the county on 75 that day. The other two were in the Oneonta city limits. Blount County Board of Education

The Blount County Board of Education acted on final personnel decisions during a called meeting last week. The board granted tenure to 42 teachers in the system while non-renewing 14 other teachers and four support personnel. The board also went into executive session for a period to consider a disciplinary matter. In other business, the board acted on the recommendation of Superintendent Jim Carr and: •granted a leave of absence to Locust Fork Child Nutrition Program employee Lola R. Hicks, effective through May 29.

City of Oneonta

Jim Tuttle of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Blount County introduced himself and his program at the Oneonta City Council’s last meeting. Tuttle explained the mentoring agency began operation in Blount County at Susan Moore, using high school students as mentors. Oneonta City Hall, Oneonta Public Library, and all state offices in the Blount County Courthouse will be closed today (Wednesday) due to the death of Danny Hicks, former long-time mayor and juvenile probation officer. Let it be said he served well his town and its citizens, his county and its troubled juveniles and their bewildered parents. It isn’t by chance that Oneonta’s flags fly at half-mast. The town flies its flags at half-mast in grief over the death of its former mayor, Danny Hicks. Never having taken himself too seriously, he would doubtless be surprised at the honor paid him by the lowered flags. All six schools in the Blount County system will play jamboree football games at Susan Moore this week. J.B. Pennington, Appalachian, and Cleveland will play tomorrow night (Thursday) with Hayden, Locust Fork, and host Susan Moore meeting on Friday evening. Thursday’s schedule has J.B. Pennington meeting Appalachian at 6 p.m. followed by Appalachian and Cleveland at 7 p.m. J.B. Pennington will face Cleveland at 8 o’clock in the final game of the night. More...
