Former Susan Moore student gets outstanding award
      Austin Peay State University sophomore and former Susan Moore student, Sydney Gosnell, recently earned the school’s “Matthew Beebe Outstanding Sophomore in Geology Award.” In addition, she has attained the President’s List every semester since her enrollment in 2007. Sydney pursues a bachelor of science degree in geology to prepare her for a related career with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).

      Rusty and Brenda Skinner of Oneonta announce the engagement of their daughter, Kimberly Ann Price, to Joshua Steven (Buck) Fuller, son of Doug and Lynda Fuller of Straight Mountain. The bride-elect is the granddaughter of Harvey and Pat Fudge of Snead, Houston and Shirley Donaldson and the late Ira Skinner of Perry, Fla. She is a 2006 graduate of Adamsville Christian Academy and works with Lester Memorial Childcare in Oneonta. The prospective groom is the grandson of J.W. and Nollie Fuller of Albertville, Mary Ruth Brothers and the late Willard Brothers of Oneonta.

      Bobby and Paula Weaver of Oneonta announce the engagement of their daughter, Brittany Amber Weaver, to Brandon Michael Stewart of Snead, son of Mike and Sherry Stewart of Demopolis. The bride-elect is the granddaughter of Robbie Weaver Ashworth of Altoona, the late Jimmy C. Weaver and the late Billie Royce Ashworth of Oneonta, the late Travis Goodwin of Remlap, and the late Bobby and Mary Hood of Addison. Her great-grandmother is Estelle Brown Weaver of Altoona, and her great-grandfather is the late Leamon Weaver of Birmingham.

Quilters give three seniors scholarships
      Blount County Quilters Guild members announce that Julianna Lind Harvey and Madeline NeSmith of Oneonta High School and George Purpura IV of Susan Moore High School are winners of the three $1000 scholarships the guild awarded to senior students in Blount County this year. Twenty-two essays were written by applicants for the scholarships, and guild members wish they could have given each one a scholarship. Money for the awards is raised by guilders’ quilt show and the sale of tickets for the fundraiser quilt, which this year is a fan pattern in many colors.

Hayden High School sets Choir and Art Extravaganza
      Hayden High School music and art departments will hold their annual joint concert and exhibit on Tuesday, May 19, at 6 p.m. Called the Choir and Art Extravaganza, the event is free of charge to the community. It is separated into three parts, featuring the first half of the choir concert in the cafetorium. After an intermission at the halfway point, the audience will move across the hall to the choir rehearsal room where the art exhibit will be staged. The exhibit will feature artwork created this year by high school art students.

She is the daughter of J.D. and Erica Whited and granddaughter of Neal and Vicky Whited and Ricky and Liz Hicks, all of Oneonta. Greatgrandparents are Robert and Marie Jolly of Cleveland, the late Joe Richards of Cleveland, the late J.D. and Willie Whited of Oneonta, Cimmonette Hicks of Oneonta, the late Fred Hicks of Oneonta, and the late D.L. and Elowayne Guyton of Oneonta.

Her grandparents are Chris and Pam Green of Royal and Dennis and Kay Maze of Horton. Her great-grandparents are Frank Green of Oneonta, Nedra Green of Hanceville, Alton and Shirley Hunt of Boaz, Q.A. and Evelyn Cardwell of Oneonta, the late Bonnie Hunt, and the late Glatis and Louise Maze.

      JESSICA NICHOLE McELVEY has been awarded a four-year salutatorian’s scholarship for acadmic excellence from the University of North Alabama. Daughter of Major Hilton and Sandy McElvey of Cleveland, she will graduate this month as salutatorian at Cleveland High School. During her senior year, she was CHS feature twirler, first-chair trumpet for concert band, and a member of the drama team, scholars bowl, and journalism staff. She was also selected as an outstanding senior and most talented.
