OBITUARIES

The Blount Countian generally does not publish obituaries unless the deceased have direct connections to this county. If your relative’s obit did not appear in the paper, that is probably the reason.

MAXINE MORTON CARR, 84, of Oneonta, died April 24, 2009, at St. Vincent’s Blount. Widow of J.C. Carr, former Blount County sheriff, she was a member of First Baptist Church of Oneonta and numerous civic organizations.

Surviving are sons Charles (Brenda) Carr of Union Grove, Jim (Brenda) Carr of Oneonta, and Kenneth (Tanya) Carr of Houston, Tex.; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; brother Donald Morton of Arab; and sister Ruth Murphree of Brooksville.

Larry Gipson, Dan Sims, and Bud Jones officiated services Monday, April 27, at 11 a.m. at Lemley Chapel. Interment was at Oak Hill Cemetery. Officers with Blount County Sheriff’s Department served as pallbearers. In lieu of flowers, the family suggested donations be made to the Oak Hill Cemetery Fund, P.O. Box 686, Oneonta, AL 35121.

DIANNE WHITED FENDLEY, 65, of Oneonta, died Monday, April 27, 2009, at St. Vincent’s Blount. A native of Blount County, she was the daughter of the late Hoyt Odell and Mildred Louise Faust Whited. She was a member of Lester Memorial United Methodist Church and had retired from BellSouth after 20 years of service. Predeceasing her in addition to her parents were son Kristopher Robin Fendley and brother Odell Whited.

Surviving are husband Charles S. Fendley; sons Charles Stephen (Anita) Fendley of Pelham and Dale Patrick Fendley of Oneonta; grandchildren Christopher Charles Fendley and Andrew Stephen Fendley; brothers Gary Faust (Dale) Whited and Phillip Dell (Pam) Whited, both of Oneonta.

Ed Self and Jerry Gargus were to officiate services April 29 at 11 a.m. at Rosa Methodist Church. Visitation was to continue Wednesday between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. Interment was to be at Dailey’s Chapel Cemetery with Valley Chapel Funeral Home directing.

SHARON D. GILLEY, 58, died April 17, 2009, at her Blountsville residence. Born in Chicago, she was disabled. Predeceasing her were father Edward C. Givens; mother Adeline Viola Novacek Givens Riha; sister Jean Slapikas; and stepfather George A. Riha.

Surviving are daughters Roberta Gilley of Blountsville and Lisa Marie Escobar of Texas; brothers James Givens of Blountsville and Stanley Givens of Mobile; sister Geraldine Cooper of Mobile; grandchildren, Donnie Thomason, Timothy Thomason, Gilberto Zarate, Sa’Fire Zarate, Joshua Castillo, Ma’Nae Guerra; and one greatgrandchild.

RUBY LEE HILL, of Oneonta, died April 27, 2009, at Golden Living Center. She was of the Baptist faith and had worked as a seamstress for Blue Bell. A Blount County native, she was predeceased by father James Alexander “Jimmy” Stephenson; mother Gertie Mae Richards Stephenson; stepmother Jessie Mae Stephenson; sisters Hazel Dehart and Annie Mae King; brothers Eldridge Stephenson, Vernon Stephenson, and Etheridge Stephenson.

Surviving are daughters Ruby Jean Hill Evans of Berlin, Sandra Hill of Oneonta, and Helen Hill (Grant) Fore of Springville; sons Billy Ray (JoAnn) Hill of Easley and Charles (Carolyn) Hill of Locust Fork; sisters Elnor Ruth Watkins of Boaz and Jimmie Lou (L.C.) Fox of Oneonta; brother James Lewis Stephenson of Nashville, Tenn.; nine grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren.

Services were to be held Wednesday, April 29, at 11 a.m. at Lemley Chapel with visitation that day from 8 a.m. until funeral time. Burial was to be at Blount Memory Gardens.

RAYMOND RUDOLPH LOTT, age 84, of Cleveland, died April 23, 2009. He was of the Methodist faith, worked a number of years for Clyde Mitchell Road Building, and served his country in the Army during World War II. He was predeceased by his parents Rev. James Dewey Lott and Leola Lott.

Surviving are wife Myrl Lott; daughters Janice (Scott) Hutcherson and Peggy (Jerry) Scarborough; grandchildren Tony Scarborough, Christie Fox, and Patty Vaughn; great-grandchild John William Vaughn

Wess Hallman officiated graveside services Sunday, April 26, at 3 p.m. at Jefferson Memorial Gardens East, Jefferson Memorial of Trussville directing.

STANLEY EUGENE MURPHREE JR., 47, died April 22, 2009, at his residence in Oneonta. Though he suffered from blindness and a number of other ailments, he displayed a remarkable courage under adversity and was a familiar sight around the town, always offering a quick smile and kind word to any greeter. The Blount native was the son of Carolyn Noojin Murphree of Oneonta and Stan Murphree Sr. of Birmingham. He graduated from UAB with a bachelor of arts degree and worked in administration with the Huie Group. His church membership was with Lester Memorial United Methodist Church.

Surviving besides his mother and father are brothers Jim Murphree of Oneonta and Ted Murphree of Albertville; sister Vanessa Murphree of New Orleans; grandmother Inez Noojin of Oneonta; niece Hanna Murphree; and nephew Andrew Murphree.

Matt Smith and David Lee officiated services Friday, April 24, at 11 a.m. at Lester Memorial United Methodist Church. Interment was at Oak Hill Cemetery with Lemley Funeral Home directing. Pallbearers were Anthony Nash, John Huie, George Shaw, Lee Alexander, Danny Kelley, Chris Green, Geoff Smith, and Michael Young.

LOUIS (ED) TOLBERT, 80, died April 22, 2009. He was predeceased by his mother and father Zella and Louis R. Tolbert and is survived by his wife Noah Earle Gilbreath Tolbert; daughter Lou Earle Tolbert (Mike) Deason; and very special grandson Mikie Currier Jr.

A 1947 graduate of Blount County High School in Oneonta, he attended Georgia Military Academy, Marion Institute, and the University of Alabama. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. A Mason, he was the third generation of Tolberts to remain in the trucking and egg business, formerly known as Tolbert’s Perishable Express & Golden Egg Products, Inc. He was a member of Oneonta First Baptist Church for 69 years.

Graveside services were held Friday, April 24, at 2 p.m. at Oak Hill Cemetery, following l p.m. visitation in Oak Hill Chapel adjacent to the cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggested donations be made to The Vision Continues at Oneonta First Baptist Church.

CLYDE COOPER TURNER, 70, of Pinson, died Friday, April 24, 2009, at Trinity Hospital. A native of Eastaboga, he had lived in Palmerdale since 1966. He was former owner/operator of Dixie Arc and was a member of Eastaboga Baptist Church and Mount Pinson Masonic Lodge #495. Predeceasing him were his father Nix Turner and a sister Marie Turner.

Surviving are wife Dee Turner; mother Clyde R. Turner of Eastaboga; son Mark Turner of Palmerdale; daughter Michele (Tommy) Lee of Cleveland; granddaughter Kristen (Shane) Moorer; granddaughter Hollie Downing; great-grandchild Kendal Hale; sisters Theresa Smith of Shelby, Myrtle (Woody) McCluer of Jacksonville, Jane (Billy) Chappell of Eastaboga, and Hope (Mac) Wilson of Gadsden.

Richard Statham and Matt Caldwell officiated graveside services Tuesday, April 28, at 11 a.m. at Eastaboga Cemetery with Usrey Brown-Service Funeral Home of Talladega directing. Pallbearers were Mark Turner, Matt Caldwell, Tommy Lee, Wayne Hicks, Billy Chappell, and Woody McCluer. In lieu of flowers, the family suggested donations be made to the American Heart Association.

EVELYN NANCY LOU VINES, 90, of Blountsville, died April 24, 2009, at St. Vincent’s Blount. A Blount native, she was a member of Royal Advent Christian Church. Predeceasing her were parents George and Lula Todd Copeland; husband Elvin Vines; brother Elton Copeland; and sister Eldora Timmerman.

Surviving are sister Alma Thomas of Royal; brothers Welton (Lois) Copeland of Cleveland, Ohio, and Hobert (Marie) Copeland of Trussville.

Services were held Tuesday, April 28, at 1 p.m. at Lemley Chapel with burial following at Liberty Hill Cemetery at Royal. Pallbearers were Larry Thomas, Mitchell Thomas, Johnathan Thomas, Eddie Copeland, Dale Williamson, and Paul David Timmerman.
