Jake Silver may have been called out at third but the Panthers are safe into the next round of the Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) playoffs. Cleveland knocked off Falkville 5- 0 and 13-7 in last week’s second round and will travel to Lexington for the quarterfinals beginning this Friday. See Sports, page A4. – Rob Rice More...
Town of Cleveland

It is alleged that another resignation by a Cleveland official was mishandled. According to council members present at Monday night’s meeting, the resignation of Mayor Larry Longshore was handled inappropriately and has therefore been rescinded. Councilman Mike Evans stated that the mayor’s resignation should have been written and presented to the municipal clerk before the council meeting on April 13 and it was not. The 25-minute council meeting was well-orchestrated with only three members of the council present; Kandy Little, Mike Evans and David Grigsby. More...

Oneonta City Board of Education

The Oneonta City Board of Education accepted the recommendation of Superintendent Jack Housch at Monday night’s meeting and made several moves relating to support personnel for the 2009-2010 school year. After a 10-minute work session, the board rehired and granted tenure to a janitorial worker and a bus driver and continued the contracts of six other support workers. The board also continued the contract of one employee who handles both maintenance and bus-mechanic duties. The board also approved the non-renewal of six support workers. More...

Ron Sparks (center), Agriculture and Industries commissioner, joins local Democrats for their annual spring barbecue. Barbara Anderson (left), county Democratic Executive Committee chair, and Mattie Harvey, county Democratic Club president, pose here with Sparks at the Palisades gathering. Local Democrats say they sold all the barbecued chicken plates available. While Anderson invited all state Democratic officeholders, only Sparks attended. Anderson notes she did receive regrets from Artur Davis. More...
Name those socialists, Mr. Bachus
Speaking to a Trussville audience a few weeks back, Congressman Spencer Bachus, RMt. Brook, proclaimed that he had a list of socialists in Congress and later revealed to a reporter the number was 17. More...
Protect and respect animals, please
I would like to let the person know who threw out three puppies on Jan. 3, 2009, on Old Compton Road and Narrows Road in the southern part of Blount County that one of the puppies is still waiting there for you to come back. It must be a nice little puppy to still be waiting for you to come back. Numerous people have tried to catch this puppy. If you stop, it wants to be with someone but it has lost its trust in people. Why? Who knows. More...
HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL
The Cleveland Panthers took advantage of a golden opportunity in last week’s second round of the Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) baseball playoffs. Playing Falkville, a 2A Area 13 foe that they had already swept in two games, the Panthers didn’t ease up. Cleveland rode a dominant pitching performance to a 5- 0 victory in the first game and then cranked up the offense in a 13-7 blasting of the visitors in game two. With the series sweep, Cleveland advances to the third round of the baseball playoffs for the first time in school history. More...

Reading the will
Background Scripture: Ephesians 1:3-14. Devotional Reading: Exodus 19:1-8. One of my favorite movies is a 1950 film “Stars In My Crown” starring Joel McCrae, Ellen Drew, and Dean Stockwell. McCrae plays the part of a frontier preacher in the mid-1850s. When hooded vigilantes threaten to hang a black man who refuses to sell his farm to one of them, the preacher suggests they first need to hear the man’s will. One after another, he ticks off the man’s meager possessions. More...
The Blount Countian generally does not publish obituaries unless the deceased have direct connections to this county. If your relative’s obit did not appear in the paper, that is probably the reason. MAXINE MORTON CARR, 84, of Oneonta, died April 24, 2009, at St. Vincent’s Blount. Widow of J.C. Carr, former Blount County sheriff, she was a member of First Baptist Church of Oneonta and numerous civic organizations. More...
