Eat candy, not lunch; not only endure, but prevail
The big lobby at Oneonta High School had a festive air on Tuesday night April 7. As the slamming hour neared, some 80 garrulous high schoolers sprawled and caterwauled happily at a dozen-odd lunchroom tables, intermingling with their contemporaries, who mounted repeated sorties to the food bar for pizza and soft drinks. Just as in church, the youths congregated in a writhing mass in the back of the room. Before the action began, co-host Stanley Moss asked everyone to move to the front near the makeshift podium. Jerry Marsh Farms

What has become a Blount County tradition announced again last week that the berries are in at Jerry Marsh Farms. Beautiful strawberries are now ripe and can be had already picked or you can do your own selecting. “We’ve got about 75 acres being farmed,” said Jerry, who has been farming for more than 40 years. “Only about four (acres) are planted in strawberries but that also means we have about 40,000 plants. They started coming in last week and we went ahead and opened.” Jerry Marsh Farms grows more than just strawberries. More...

A line of severe thunderstorms Sunday night left a swath of damage in the Straight Mountain area. According to the National Weather Service report, the EF-2 tornado cut a path 300 yards wide and 6.5 miles long and packed winds estimated at 122 miles per hour. The twister destroyed four structures and left 14 others with minor to severe damage. In all, seven chicken houses were also destroyed, and approximately 95,000 chickens were displaced or killed. The tornado also left dozens without power for a while Sunday evening. More...

Town of Blountsville
Volunteers pause for a photo opportunity after working all day Saturday during the annual town clean-up in Blountsville. Mayor Randy Millwood (middle of the picture) took time to thank the volunteers for their assistance. The mayor also thanked (in no particular order) PALS, Farmers Insurance, Lucky’s, We-Tot-Em Quick Stop, Dollar General, Allied Waste, Frosty Freeze, the town council, and Blount County Commissioner Robert Bullard for their generous assistance. The core principle of addiction
This article is one of a series on the faces and forms of addiction. It is a collaboration among Alden Brindle, intensive outpatient director at Hope House; his wife Marie, Hope House counselor; and writer Nancy Jackson. In this week’s article I will start a discussion of the core principle of addiction – control. Addiction is about trying to control how one thinks and feels. A person in physical pain wants to escape the hurt. More...
Thanks and appreciation ...
Thanks to your terrific web site, I was able to go back and see the caption and wonderful photograph announcing the designation of Tidwell Cemetery as a historical site. For some reason, I never received this issue of the paper. I especially appreciated seeing the picture of Lois Baty, who has worked so hard and has given so much to the care and beautification of this special place in Blount County which is sacred ground to many of us. As always, THANKS to all the fine people at The Blount Countian for their fine work. More...
HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL PLAYOFFS
The high school baseball playoffs started last week and all four Blount County teams participating had hopes of advancing at least a couple of rounds. However, after the dust cleared from the weekend, only the Cleveland Panthers are still standing. Cleveland came back from a game two shellacking by Mars Hill to topple the visiting Panthers 7-4 in the deciding game on Saturday. With the win, Cleveland advances to the second round to face Area 13 rival Falkville which upset Hatton in the first round. More...
Readers of recipes re-printed in The Blount Countian by permission will recognize the name of Fellowship Baptist Church’s cookbook “Pleasures from the Good Earth.” First printed in 2003, the cookbooks have been so appreciated the church decided to have more printed. Unfortunately, the cookbooks arrived without the church’s name on the front cover and had to be returned for correction. They have now arrived and are for sale from church members. More...
FINDING A CHURCH HOME
Over the years I have had the privilege of helping families find a church to call their own. It’s an important decision. Parents want to be sure there are substantive programs to help their children grow spiritually. They also want to be sure the worship experiences and educational opportunities will promote their own continued faith development. It’s a big decision, and that’s under normal circumstances. Imagine the whole country is watching and waiting for you to decide where you will go for worship. Feel any pressure? More...
The Blount Countian generally does not publish obituaries unless the deceased have direct connections to this county. If your relative’s obit did not appear in the paper, that is probably the reason. JESSIE DIXON BENNETT, 80, of Hayden, died April 18, 2009, at TLC Nursing Home. She was born in Cherokee County and was the daughter of the late Oscar and Birdie Crane Dixon. A former seamstress with Blount Manufacturing Company, she enjoying quilting, gardening, growing flowers, and sewing, and she loved her dog Sandy. More...
